FORT MEADE, FL

FORT MEADE is a small city in central Florida, home to scenic landscapes, historic buildings, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities.

History

FORT MEADE, Florida was established in 1849 along a military road. The city is named for George FORT MEADE who was a lieutenant serving in Florida at the time who first sited the town. Since its beginnings, FORT MEADE has survived four major fires, all on today’s Broadway Street. One fire was started by the Union forces in 1864.

Historic Places

FORT MEADE has over 150 buildings that are designated landmarks, and over 300 homes on the National Register of Historic Places. One stunning example is the Christ Episcopal Church. This bright white church was built in 1889 with a design by architect J. H. Weddell, who incorporated elements of Gothic Revival into a frame vernacular. Another landmark is the FORT MEADE Historical Museum. The museum showcases the area’s history with displays of local artifacts inside FORT MEADE ’s first indoor schoolhouse, built in 1885.

Patterson Park

What was once an open-pit mine is now a gorgeous 16.5-acre park with a waterfront. Patterson Park was landscaped after the mine was closed, and is now a valuable resource to people in the FORT MEADE area. Visitors can enjoy a beach volleyball court, fish in one of the observation areas, picnic in the gazebos, or take a stroll on the paved walkway.

Kayaking

FORT MEADE ’s waterways are ideal for kayakers and canoers. The Fort FORT MEADE Outdoor Recreation Area is a preferred place for starting a trip on the water, and is also the start of the Peace River Paddle, a designated paddling trail created by the Florida Paddlers. Visitors or those who don’t own their own boats can rent kayaks or canoes at nearby spots like Canoe Outpost-Peace River, Inc, which also features a campground.
